Rotational Development

By thebaseballstore.net added on Thu, 09 Oct 2008

The requirements and goals of baseball training differ from other sports because the necessary movements and strength needed differ. In baseball it is important that a training program work on rotational development since that is essential to a player’s success in baseball. Training the rotational movements is important for many reasons and therefore should be an integral part of the player’s program.

In baseball rotational development is of such great importance because the rotational range of motion, also referred to as ROM, is what most effects the power that a player has for pitching a baseball or for swinging a baseball bat. Rotating also happens during the basic motions and techniques used in baseball, such as intense sprinting when running to bases or batting and then sprinting. Although it is important, it is not easy to directly train a certain muscle or muscle group since many are working together to create the rotational movements which create enough force for playing baseball properly.

Other benefits of rotational development are that it reduces the risk of injury, movements become more efficient and greater muscle force is a result of proper training. In order to get the most out of a rotational developmental training you will have to start your players off at a very basic level. Rotation has to be built up progressively and that allows for the muscles to develop and improve along the way. Certain exercises are suitable for rotational training and which should be a part of any baseball workout. It is important that a baseball player not try to complete a workout that is too advanced, since it will have the opposite effect of successful training. On the other hand, if a certain training level has been reached then it will be time to move up to the next level so that the player continues the rotational development plan that will improve his baseball playing skills.

For beginners, there are certain methods for rotational development that are suitable. The four main exercises are crunches where you rotate to a side, twisting hops that can be done with the use of a jumping rope, torso twists using a medicine ball or no weight at all and Russian twists which have a number of variations like standing or while seated. Once these four rotational development exercises have been learned and can be done, then it is time to move on to more advanced workouts and adding more resistance training. The speed with which performed should increase with the skill level.
